Flats Sequencing Map
This map from a recent Postal Service presentation illustrates that Phase I of the Flats Sequencing System is heavily concentrated on the East Coast, especially the Northeast. (Click on the map to magnify it.)
More than half of the 100 machines are slated for Eastern Seaboard states, and more than one third are in the megalopolis that runs from Boston to Washington, DC.
The Postal Service is putting the machines into major urban areas, close to the kind of carrier routes that tend to get the highest volumes of catalogs, magazines, and other flat mail. To avoid construction costs, postal officials are also mostly limiting Phase I to buildings having enough excess space to hold the football-field-sized machines.
The end result is that Phase I bypasses such major metropolitan areas as Dallas/Fort Worth, St. Louis, and Seattle. Between the declining volume of flat mail (such as catalogs and magazines) and problems getting the machines up to standard, those areas may never get an FSS machine.
For more information about the Flats Sequencing System, please see:
I see san diego is on there to now receive two machines. funny this statement "To avoid construction costs, postal officials are also mostly limiting Phase I to buildings having enough excess space to hold the football-field-sized machines." can not be ture as san diego is building on to a buildin some 75k square feet just to house these machines.
ReplyDeletebut a area exective on April 20, 2010 just said that the FSS was being placed on hold as the flat volume is too low to justify the costs.
The employees in Dallas have been told they are getting a FSS machine in October. No official documentation I am aware of confirms this.
ReplyDeleteIn Minneapolis, MN the USPS is buying the HHH Metrodome (For $1.6 billion, but includes future infrastructure improvements) stadium, the currnet home of the Minnesota Vikings NFL team to house the football-field-sized machine. The Vikings plan to leave for LA following this season after not getting a new stadium.
ReplyDeleteThey have spent so much money retrofitting buildings. Trenton had to have the building added on to. The 4 that are going into the building in Jersey city ( not Newark) had to have the military mail and foreign mail moved at an additional expense. They have been working on the building for three or more years and still don’t have the first one working. They also had to lower the standards to accept the machines from the manufacturer. Now all they have too do is find flats to work on them!
ReplyDeleteThis is the problem with the Post Office. It shows blue dot in Texas is Houston. Try again dumbass. That is way south from Houston. hat is where Chorpus Christi is. If the idiots cant even produce a correct map then why do we trust them to run the Poswt Office.
